Stumpy little steam-powered cargo ships like these were once a familiar sight around the west coast of Scotland, providing an essential supply link ferrying goods and coal around the islands - their flat bottoms allowing them to beach and unload in places that lacked suitable piers. Although only a handful remain in service today, they are instantly recognised and much loved thanks largely to the short stories by Neil Munro about Vital Spark and her captain Para Handy.
